Hi there! Thank you so much for visiting my site. On the following pages, you will be able to see some of my work as a documentarian, flautist, and educator. As a cultural curator, I use filmmaking, photography, and music as primary mediums for storytelling. These same tools are integral parts of my well constructed, interdisciplinary pedagogy as an educator in the classroom. Real people, lives, and stories are my impetus for action. Please feel free to contact me personally with any questions or thoughts.
Full Bio of Taryn Lee
Born and raised in San Jose, California, all of Taryn's creative endeavors are produced for the betterment of humanity and to ease its unique relationship with itself.
She received a Master of Arts degree in Social Documentation from the University of California, Santa Cruz and a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Women’s Studies from Spelman College. Taryn believes documentary film and photography are vehicles for exploration, analysis, and celebration. Deepening human connection, she believes the image and song allows us to experience what is underrepresented in larger media. The arts help give voice to those whose stories might otherwise be silent and whose histories would also be so, by result. If multiple histories are not seen, humanity has no means to "trace the bread crumbs" back to itself, particularly during times of severity.
Creatively implementing oral history narratives, Taryn's work speaks to the strength of the human spirit, while restating struggle into a framework of positive social transformation. Conceptually based artwork generated with a critical analysis, Taryn's research and visual creations are centered around the concept of intersectionality (the idea that individual and social aspects are necessarily intertwined).
She is the founder and director of Esoteric Lore, an eight-year-old, socially conscious, multi-media art collective and traveling exhibit, originating in Atlanta, Georgia. Over the last decade, Taryn has guest lectured at several universities around the nation. A wide range of teaching experiences, Taryn has also taught TK-8 and college level curriculum. Please see Resume or Curriculum Vitae located to the right for more complete records.
A flautist of 21 years, Taryn has played several different flute models, in various genres of music and bands. Improvisational flute playing is her speciality and actively welcomes opportunities for sonic engagement, no matter the occasion.
